Store dry dog and cat food in its original bag in a cool, dry, secure place. If you use an outer container, put the bag inside where practical, keeping the product label and batch details readable. This preserves the information you need to identify exactly what your pet ate while making the daily feeding routine easier to manage.
The bag and container have different jobs. The bag carries the manufacturer's directions and identifying details; the outer container can help organize and secure it. Neither replaces a suitable storage location.
Keep the original bag and its identifying details
The FDA recommends keeping pet food in its original packaging and, when using another container for dry food, placing the whole bag inside it. Keep the product name, manufacturer, UPC, lot number, and best-by date available.
Before opening, find those details on your bag. They may appear in different places, including a seam or a stamped panel. Avoid cutting through them when opening the package. Take clear backup photos of the full label and the batch markings, and check that the images are readable before putting the bag away.
Name the photos so another caregiver can find them: the pet's name, product, and opening date make a practical starting point. Photos supplement the package; keeping the original also preserves instructions you may not have thought to photograph.
Choose the location before choosing a bin
The FDA advises cool, dry storage below 80°F for dry pet food, with secure access if pets can get into it. Follow any additional storage directions on the particular product. An attractive container beside a hot appliance is still in the wrong place.
Check the location during ordinary household activities. Could a sink splash reach the bag? Does the space become warm during the afternoon? Can a determined pet open the cupboard or push off the lid? Move the food if the actual conditions do not match the label.
Separate each pet's food clearly when diets differ. Put the intended bag where the person serving can read it without lifting several heavy packages. For help identifying the diet, portion units, and intended life stage, use our dog and cat food-label worksheet.
Use an outer container without losing the bag
Choose a container large enough to accommodate the original package and close as intended. Check the opening before buying: a capacity stated in pounds does not tell you whether your particular bag will fit through it or stand inside without obscuring the label.
If you must pour food directly into another container, use a clean, dry container with a secure lid and retain the identifying package details. Purina's storage guide recommends a container made for safe pet-food storage and keeping the original bag or a photograph of its details. Replace those details whenever a new bag goes in, and check the container's care directions.
Make the arrangement easy to inspect. The opening date should be visible, but it should not cover the best-by date or lot code. Keep different foods and batches separately identified rather than creating an untraceable mixture.
Finish, clean, dry, and reset
The FDA recommends washing and drying the storage container between bags to remove residual fats and crumbs. Its guidance also calls for washing and drying scooping utensils after use. Follow the container's own care limits; do not assume every lid, seal, or body is dishwasher-safe.
Plan that reset into the handover from one bag to the next. Put the unopened replacement aside while the container is cleaned and dried. Remove the old batch note, confirm the new label, and add the new opening date. Repeatedly pouring fresh food over unidentified remnants makes this handover harder to track.
Leave the new bag sealed until you need it when practical. If two bags are open, label both distinctly and follow each product's directions. A shared household note helps prevent one person starting another bag while someone else is still using the first.
Make a stock-rotation label
Use this original worksheet as a companion to the manufacturer's packaging. It does not establish a new shelf life.
- Pet and exact food: __________
- Bag opened: __________
- Best-by date and lot code location: __________
- After-opening directions from this label: __________
- Original bag or retained label stored: __________
- Current bag / next unopened bag: __________
- Container cleaned and dried on: __________
- Question for the manufacturer: __________
There is no single after-opening deadline for every dry food. If the label does not answer your question, ask the manufacturer about the exact formula and package. Purina distinguishes the unopened best-by date from storage after opening; do not assume that date grants the same period under every condition.
Use the record when shopping again
Check the exact product name and package size before comparing dog food or cat food. Choose a quantity your household can store and use according to its directions. A bigger bag is only convenient when it fits the storage plan.
If you suspect a problem with the food, retain its identifying details and contact the manufacturer; contact your veterinarian if your pet becomes unwell. For reward pouches and smaller packages, our opened-treat storage guide covers a separate routine.
